Micronutrient Testing

The SpectraCell Micronutrient Test measures long-term nutrient status inside the cells vs outside of the cells for 35 different nutrients. This is a better representation of nutrient status than traditional labs and will help us identify any nutrient deficiencies that could be contributing to behavior, cognition, or other symptoms. Typical lab testing measures nutrients outside the cell, which is not an accurate representation of nutrient status, since serum concentration changes daily along with diet, supplements, and hydration.

SpectraCell measures nutrients inside the white blood cells, which show us the level of the functional (usable & absorbed) nutrient amounts. Supplements and diet will not throw this test, as in typical serum tests. SpectraCell Micronutrient test will give an accurate snapshot of stores over the past 6-9 months.

Nutrient Deficiency and Autism

The most common reason for nutrient deficiency in autism is selective eating, though there are other reasons like imbalance of gut bacteria and genetic abnormalities. When children are selective in the foods they eat (I’ve seen some kids with autism consuming fewer than 5 unique foods!) they drastically decrease the amount of nutrients they receive from their diet. Over time, nutrient levels become depleted and can cause many different issues in their behavior, cognition, focus, and the function of their central nervous system (see complete list of symptoms of nutrient deficiency below). Below are common nutrients that are deficient in children with ASD, all which are tested using the SpectraCell Micronutrient Test:

CardioMetabolic Testing is a great way to look at CardioMetabolic risk (heart disease and diabetes). It tests Pre-Diabetes risk factors, Lipid Levels, Vascular Inflammation and Biomarkers, and Lipoproteins.

Measures hormone balance in males. Hormone balance is necessary for muscle mass, bone health, well being, skin development, sex organ development, energy levels, immunity, brain health, and cardiovascular health.

Measures thyroid hormone balance. Thyroid hormones regulate growth, metabolism, and stress reaction. Thyroid hormones also play a role in nutrient deficiencies and inflammation.

The length of our telomeres (sections of genetic material at the end of each chromosome) are vital to our health. As we age or as we are exposed to environmental toxins (diet, air quality, etc.) our telomeres shorten. Measuring our telomere length can be very insightful for lifestyle changes.

 

OmegaCheck allows us to measure status of Omega-3s (EPA+DHA) and Omega-6s to determine deficiency. Omega Status is commonly low in ASD, which can lead to cognitive decline and brain fog/impaired concentration, among other issues.

The MTHFR Gene mutation is widely studied in autism and ADD/ADHD. This specific gene is responsible for the enzyme converting inactive folate (folic acid) into active folate (5,10-MTHF) for the body to use. It’s important for metabolism of folate and homocysteine (toxic if not converted). This specific gene plays a major role in the methylation cycle which impacts a large majority of cellular functions in our body.
